Religion: We will be visiting the Carlton Mosque on Drummond St in the morning and the Melbourne Buddhist Centre in the afternoon to learn more about these two religions, Islam and Buddhism. The focus will be on finding out more, exploring what these religions mean to their followers and more broadly, comparing and contrasting the two belief systems.
Multiculturalism: In the morning we will visit the North Melbourne Huddle to explore issues around multiculturalism, immigration and cultural identity. We will also be looking at the psychology of discrimination and acceptance in order to better understand what influences us as a multicultural society.
Media Literacy Trail: How does the media affect how we see ourselves? Are our identities [as individuals, as teenagers, as Australians] shaped by the media? Do we really have control over who we believe we are?? This week we will learn how to analyse the messages that the media sends us, so that we have more choice about what to believe. We will go out into the city as 'culture vultures' - investigating the spaces and places that try to shape young people's identities.

Is it an accurate representation of how you prefer to think or learn?
What does this mean for how you work & learn in Galileo?
Multiple Intelligences Activity: In your group, you will need to create an activity that supports a specific set of learning preferences. Please review the attached task:
See the film "The Black Balloon" and consider how physical and intellectual disabilities affect people, their families and their carers. Visit the Muscular Dystrophy Association in the afternoon.
Internet Resrouces for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy:
Does Melbourne support multiple faiths to live alongside one another in harmony? How can we establish multi-faith dialogue in our community? What are the benefits of learning more about other belief systems - whether you believe in religion or not? We will be visiting with the Drummond Street Mosque and the Melbourne Buddhist Centre to learn more about both Buddhism and Islam - whilst considering the questions above.
Character & Culture:
How do our individual differences make for a diversity of life paths? What strengths and weaknesses do we each have? How does this influence our choices? What about culture? What influence does culture have? Can we see our own culture? We will travel tot he North Melbourne Huddle in the morning to learn about our own characteristics and hear stories from a community member. In the afternoon we will discuss culture and reflect on its influence on our lives. Important: Must bring sports gear for the morning session.
Difference & Disability:
What does it meant to be "normal"? We're all different, but what if something about our life made it much harder for us act normal, to learn, or to move around like everyone else? How would this feel? How do we - as individuals, schools and communities - support people who have different levels of ability? On Wednesday we will look at hidden and visible disabilities, and watch the film "The Black Balloon" to explore the impacts of disability on family, school and social life. In the afternoon we will visit the Muscular Dystrophy Association in North Melbourne to meet some of the guys there and maybe find out what kind of things they do for fun! Bring sports shoes...
Here are the board notes from our discussion in class.
